How to Prep for Deer Season Right Now

With things just barely turning green right now in many places, fall and deer season seems so far away. But five months is going to fly by! If you’re not taking advantage of the spring season to do some things that will benefit your 2023 deer season, you should be. The weather is nice, the bugs are sparse, and vegetation hasn’t overgrown everything yet. Spring is an excellent time to do things that will benefit your hunting season when October rolls around.
Shed Hunting
Not only is shed hunting a blast, it’s also a great way to cover ground and see deer sign. Finding sheds gives intel on individual bucks that are using an area, and when. Bedding cover and food sources are both great spots to look for sheds. Shed hunting also has the tendency to make you walk different places than you normally might go on a walk in the woods. Moving through the woods with the intention of seeking out good buck bedding cover and food sources can allow you to find new spots that could be great during next year’s hunting season.
Spring Scouting
Along the same lines as shed hunting, springtime scouting can be very informative. With less vegetation and dense cover to wade through and block things out, seeing trails, beds and sign from last fall such as rubs is a little bit easier. You can see further through the woods and pick out deer trails and sign pretty easily this time of the year.
Plan Food Plots
Planning and planting food plots in the spring is a major task for those managing their property for deer. Disking, spraying and otherwise preparing areas for food plots or clearing areas for new food plots is a big time commitment, but the effort has a high likelihood of paying off later. Ordering and purchasing seed, equipment and making changes to food plot layout are all things that can be done right now so you’re ready when the right weather comes along.
Habitat Management
In addition to food plots, there are plenty of other habitat management actions you can take to make your property more wildlife-friendly. Planting trees such as evergreens for thermal cover, oaks for acorns (investing in the future!) and shrubs for cover are all excellent and important. Brush piles and creating good cover for does to hide their fawns is another important way to help improve recruitment into the population. If you are able to get rid of old barbed wire that has long since served its purpose, this is a great way to help fawns as well by removing that hazard.
Additionally, planting species that are used for winter browse helps support the deer population a year from now when resources are scarce! Much better than unnaturally concentrating animals at feeders. Prescribed burns pay off in a huge way when managing for quality habitat and forage, as well!
Scout Public Land
The nice weather is a great reason to get out and do some exploring of new spots if you’re a public land hunter. You can cover ground quickly and see sign fairly easily, as well as get a general lay of the land for new spots you’re interested in hunting.
Research Licenses and Tags
Whitetail hunting is so much about hunting an individual or group of individual bucks that it makes it tough to want to leave and go somewhere else to hunt. But there can be so many memories made by trying out a new state or new area within your own state to hunt! Challenge yourself to do some research and get a tag for somewhere new. If nothing else, you’ll learn something about white-tailed deer.
